Eye Examinations
As with most health matters, prevention is better than cure! This holds true for our eyes. Problems with your eye may not be obvious early on but as soon as a problem is identified, the better it can be treated. Regular eye checks are important to prevent unnecessary damage to your eyes due to undiagnosed conditions.
Examining the eye reveals much about your general state of health – for example high blood pressure, diabetes and neurological issues.
Regular checks are also essential for drivers and for people whose eyesight may be affected by their occupation (e.g. VDU operators). Of course for those with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma or high blood pressure it is essential that regular eye examinations be carried out.
Everyone is entitled to a free eye examination under the NHS at least every 2 years and more frequently for the categories listed:
- are under 16, or under 19 and in full time education,
- are aged 60 and over,
- are registered blind or partially sighted,
- have diabetes or glaucoma,
- are aged 40 or over with a first degree relative with glaucoma, or have been diagnosed at risk of glaucoma,
- have been prescribed a complex lens, or
- are receiving certain benefits or credits
If you are eligible for help with NHS costs under the NHS Low Income Scheme, you can claim some or all of the cost of sight tests, glasses and/or contact lenses for you, your partner and your children. You are already entitled to full help with health costs if you or your partner are receiving Income Support, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, or if you are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate.
